Our local NPR is having a tote bag logo design contest. Although voting isn't open to the public (so I can't get my dad to vote 100 times for my victory) I still gave it a shot. Whether it wins or not I think it's pretty sweet! Angular and clean, right now my favorite things about design. I'll hopefully have an update with my winning design, but in any case I hope whoever wins blows my design out the water - being so simple I'm sure it won't be hard ;) |

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and if readers remember a few years ago I had a little lump scare of my own. It was quite a nerve wrecking experience, but my benign lump was safely removed a short time after it was discovered, but I have never forgotten how important it is to take things like lump checking seriously.
So in inspiration of #ShowMeYourPink for Breast Cancer Awareness I donned my pink vintage dress coat. Discovered in a St. Vincent de Paul's my outfit cost $6! Kind of can't believe it. Now that the weather is cooling down, it's a great fancy get up that just snaps together and makes me look like a million bucks. I'm attending an amazing derby themed party in May to celebrate the Kentucky Derby. When I was younger I was a horse enthusiast. I rode horses as often as I could, and even contemplated being a jockey (I'm 5'2 so I had a shot), so needless to say I'm excited! Now I'm going to the event as a photographer, but I want totally still wanna rock the whole reason for going to a Kentucky Derby themed party - an amazing hat!
On another work related note - I've been designing up a storm. I made 4 flyers, a set of billboards, a couple of logos and a promotional material in about a 5 day time span. Phew! I'm so happy and exhausted! This is definitely a post I have been meaning to write forever. I'm a novice photographer, and I kinda play with my camera more than understand it. Luckily Ryan understands them inside and out so he's always on hand to help me when I'm staring at my settings all confused. Shutter Speed The speed of your shutter - or how quickly it makes that snappy noise. Okay, okay, I know I sound silly when I say it like that, but that's kind of what it is. The higher the ratio 1/125 vs 1/250 the faster the shutter snaps down and captures your image. A fast moving image will need a faster shutter speed, but there's a caveat to that. The faster the shutter the less time you allow your camera to capture light - leading to a darker photo - you will have to adjust other settings to get the perfect setting. For long exposures reduce it to about as low as it can go and you can get awesome pictures like this : F-Stop or Aperture
The amount of light you allow into your lens. As the number goes higher - the less amount of light you allow into your lens. It's usually one of the easiest settings to change throughout shooting because it will constantly vary. ISO Iso Sensitivity is a little more tricky. The lower the number the crisper the image - but there are a lot of factors that will come into play when choosing your setting. Sometimes I just give up and click AUTO because nowadays the cameras are very smart and trusting them is better than fooling around with settings for 20 minutes and losing your shot. I am developing a new blog that I am making with my twin sister, Ann. Emerald+Plum is our collaboration and soon to be my main focus in the blogging realm. I've been also revamping my site to focus more on my growing photography and graphic design ventures. Emerald+Plum should be able to launch around summer time - give or take how heavy my workload is.
At home I am surrounded by boys. Ryan, Julian, and even my dogs, Doc and Banjo are all boys. Being held up to my elbows in testosterone can make a somewhat tomboy crave some pink and frills. I try to keep a good balance of tomboy and girly girl but I think I need to lay on the pastels heavy to compete!
As the middle child of my large family, Susie, definitely tries to stand out from the rest. She is a biking enthusiast (owning the cutest shop selling up-cycled bicycle jewelry), an outdoorsy gal, and most of all, a free spirit. She and her fiancé, Clayton, brought me to this abandoned sheep field - the same place that he proposed to her a few months ago - so I could capture their playful romance.
So, I decided to put my design skills to the test and entered a local t-shirt design contest. I'm nervous because there are some awesome entries alongside mine, but here's hoping I win!
Feel free to vote here for my design - it's the "Radio Blast" - Thank you for all your love and support in my design work! Everyday I'm achieving more than I thought was possible and I couldn't have done it on my own :) Friday was the unexpected start of an early weekend. I had to take off work because it snowed in Louisiana! Well, not exactly snowed, there was sleet everywhere and the roads weren't a safe place. We stayed in our warm home mostly, and when we were desperate to get out, ran around on the frozen ground as if we were ice skaters.
This Sunday I took my sister's engagement pictures - amazingly the weather warmed up to the mid-sxities. I had a lot of fun capturing their fun together and can't wait to upload the pictures! When working with clients there's many different processes used to pinpoint the exact design to show off their business or event. I worked with Pippa Marx Studio in making a logo for her Etsy shop and this is the process I used. Next I designed a variety of looks for her to choose from. She loved many different styles and would ask me to tweak certain ones here and there. I loved exploring the variety while maintaining a theme. She ended up settling for one modern logo and one vintage looking logo to use for different products.
